I read “America’s White Table” to my third grade class yesterday so they would know why they have the day off today. A few of them were in tears by the time it was over. The rest were just sitting silently. I asked them to draw a picture to thank a veteran for their service. Many, many of them drew a little child holding an American flag. One, which I found especially touching, included these words: “Thank you for allowing me to hold this flag.”
Not a single one mentioned anything about having the day off from school. That’s how I know they understood what they day was really about…..

I talked to some Vets from WWII tonight. Thier stories were interesting but what I was amazed by was that they guys asking the questions were my parent’s age. I just figured that growing up in the 50s they would have heard all the stories and known more about the roles of the local people than they did.

It was also amazing that these men who are mid to late 80s remembered with complete clarity thier times at war and everything that happened. (These are the older people from church who sometimes don’t remember everyday things.)
